Frequently asked questions

Editable formats include everything that can be process in any standard text editor or a CAT-tool without prior OCR. Examples of editable file formats:

  • .doc, .docx, .dot, .dotx, .docm, .dotm, .rtf, .ppt, .pptx, .pot, .potx, .pptm, .potm, .xls, .xlsx, .xlt, .xltx, .xlsm, .xltm

  • .xml, .xhtm, .xhtml, Android .xml
  • .xliff (1.2),.xliff (2.0), .xliff for WordPress, mqxliff (MemoQ xliff), tmx
  • .dita, .ditamap
  • .md, .markdown

  • .tag, .xtg

Uneditable formats basically mean everything that cannot be edited in a standard text editor or a CAT-tool without prior OCR. In order to translate any text locked in an image file format, we need to OCR it first. Examples of uneditable file formats:

  • .pdf
  • .jpeg, .png etc.

If you have the text that is more than 100 words locked in an uneditable format, it needs to be OCRed for translators to be able to work with it fast. Why is that?

  • To work with a “translation memory” we need the text to be editable.
  • OCRing the source document helps us to match the source layout exactly.
  • Outdated methods of translating “from the hard copy” take about 3 times more time and budget.

It is absolutely fine to have some preferences in terms of style or flow – after all, no one knows your company better than you. Our Ultimate Package includes up to 2 rounds of client’s edit validation: our proofreaders will check your edits for spelling, grammar, and stylistic issues and will get back to you with any comments or suggestions they may have.

DTP or Desktop publishing is the use of the computer and software to create visual displays of ideas and information. Desktop publishing documents may be for desktop or commercial printing or electronic distribution, including PDF, slideshows, email newsletters, electronic books, and the Web.

If your source document contained a lot of graphics and design elements, we need to re-create the exact same format, layout, graphics, and style in our target translation – this is called a DTP service in the translation industry.

Post-DTP proofreading is always performed by a native expert linguist and is needed to make sure the layout reads perfectly for the target audience. What can go wrong if you skip the post-DTP proofreading step:

  • The source layout can cause grammar issues in the target language.
  • The target translation may require some additional punctuation that was intentionally avoided in the source.
  • The target translation can be longer/shorter than the source, which may require correction.
  • Syllable shifts that look fine in the source may cause readability issues in the target.
